Measurement / IRC

Accurate measurement is the foundation of fair racing.

IRC (International Rating Certificate) is an international rating system designed to enable sailing yachts of different designs, sizes, and performance characteristics to compete fairly in the same race.

Under the IRC system, a yacht’s physical characteristics and performance-related parameters are assessed to determine its TCC (Time Corrector). The yacht’s elapsed race time is then adjusted using this coefficient to calculate its corrected time, allowing different types of yachts to compete within a common rating framework.

IRC Measurement and Certification

An accurate and up-to-date IRC certificate is essential to maintaining fairness and sporting integrity in yacht racing.

During the measurement process, the yacht and its equipment are measured in accordance with IRC requirements, and the relevant data is used for certification. Under IRC rules, the yacht owner is responsible for the accuracy of the declared measurements and for ensuring that the yacht continues to comply with the information stated on its certificate.

If any modification is made that may affect the yacht’s rating, the relevant information must be updated and, where necessary, a new or amended certificate must be issued.

Race Preparation Starts with Measurement

Accurate measurement and a valid IRC certificate are more than administrative requirements; they are fundamental elements of fair competition.

Before entering a race, yacht owners are encouraged to check the validity of their certificates and ensure that the information on the certificate accurately reflects the yacht’s current configuration. Any required measurement or certification procedures should be completed in advance.
